Come to West End Alternative!

Spencer is one of our recent graduates.  She has tremendous talent in performing arts, which she is now studying in college.
She expanded her creativity in the courses she took at our school.

This video is a project that she made in her film class to show potential students what West End Alternative School has to offer them.

Fitness Equipment

The Phys. ed. department has recently purchased new fitness equipment, including additional dumbells of varying weight to add to our collection. Moreover, a multi purpose weight bench has been added to West End's Fitness Program, allowing students to work their entire body. With the bench and the barbell we now have, students can do a range of weightlifting activities working chest, arms, shoulders and legs, in a safe way building muscle or toning their bodies. While purchased as equipment for our fitness class, this equipment is available for student use at lunch Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and afterschool on Thursday. Thursday afterschool we also play coed volleyball for all WEA students interested. Furthermore, if anyone has weightlifting or fitness equipment in good condition (eg. standard sized weight plates, or barbell with locks), that is not being used, and you would like to donate it to our school, please contact us and let us know what you have (416-393-0660 - ask for Jeff). We would love to have any such equipment should it suit our programming needs and space available to us.

Sound Messages Week One Update

The sound messages course has gotten off to a very progressive start after it's first week.  Each class has been combined with the two elements of learning that give this course it's quality: live performances from students and critical analysis of the messages in popular music and live poetry.

We studied some lyrical content from Lauryn Hill, as well as other influential artists.  The students also critiqued a diverse array of poetry from the SLAM poetry series Def Poetry Jam.

Furthermore, the students have begun writing scripts for their first audio project.  They are writing profiles of themselves and combining that with three pieces of music that represent their individuality.  We begin recording our scripts today.

The sound messages course is developing into a factory of critical thinking and exciting creativity.

Please enjoy a small sound messages from one of our students Dre.  He says it best, 'Express Yourself!'
